Our history

Britannic Group plc

12 April 1866
The company’s origins were founded in Birmingham, and was named British Workman’s Mutual Assurance Company Limited.

10 August 1875
We changed our name to The British Workman’s Assurance Company Limited.

3 August 1892
We changed our name to The British Workman’s and General Assurance Company Limited.

7 January 1905
We expanded quickly throughout the UK and were renamed Britannic.

20 April 1921
Our name was then changed to Britannic Assurance Company Limited.

3 December 1981
We re-registered as Britannic Assurance plc.

7 December 1999
We bought 75% of Britannia Asset Management Limited (BAM) from Britannia Building Society, and renamed this to Britannic Asset Management Limited.

We also bought Alba Life Limited (previously called Britannia Life).

15 June 2000
We bought 96% of Evergreen Retirement Assurance Limited and renamed this to Britannic Retirement Solutions.

29 September 2000
We bought 60% of First Active Financial plc and renamed this to Britannic Money plc.

7 March 2001
We bought the remaining 25% of Britannia Asset Management Limited.

2001
We closed our sales force.

10 December 2002
We bought the remaining 40% of Britannic Money plc.

26 April 2002
We changed our name to Britannic Group plc.

4 March 2003
Britannic Assurance plc stopped selling new policies.

10 November 2003
Britannic Retirement Solutions Limited stopped selling new policies.

30 June 2003
Britannic Money plc was sold to Paragon Group.

5 December 2003
We bought 3.8% of Britannic Retirement Solutions Limited.

2004
As we stopped selling policies in 2003 our new aim was to become the best owner of closed life funds.

31 December 2004
We bought the life operations of Allianz Cornhill Insurance plc.

6 April 2005
We bought Century Group Limited and its subsidiary companies.

30 September 2005
We transferred Cornhill policyholders to Britannic Unit Linked Assurance Limited.

Britannic Group plc was merged into Resolution plc.

Phoenix Life Limited

1971
The company was founded, and was originally called Lloyds Life Assurance Limited.

1985
Lloyds Life Assurance Limited was bought by Royal Insurance and renamed Royal Heritage Life Assurance Limited.

1996
The Royal Insurance Group and Sun Alliance and London Insurance Group merged.

1998
Royal Heritage Life Assurance Limited was renamed Royal & SunAlliance Linked Insurances Limited when the funds of the following companies were moved into this company:

Royal Life (Unit Linked Assurances) Limited, Royal Life (Unit Linked Pension Funds) Limited, Sun Alliance Linked Insurance Limited, Sun Alliance Pensions Limited and Property Growth Assurance Company Limited.

2002
Royal & SunAlliance Linked Insurances Limited stopped selling new policies.

Phoenix Life Limited was merged into Resolution Life Group Limited.

Resolution Life Group Limited

11 October 2002
The company was originally founded.

30 September 2004
The UK life operations of Royal & SunAlliance Life & Pensions Limited were bought.

April 2005
Swiss Life (UK) plc was bought.

All Royal & SunAlliance Life and Swiss Life (UK) policies were re-branded to Phoenix.

Resolution Life Group Limited was merged into Resolution plc.

Resolution plc          

6 September 2005
Resolution plc was formed when Resolution Life Group Limited and Britannic Group plc merged. This created the largest specialist manager of in-force UK life funds.

29 December 2005
Royal & SunAlliance Linked Insurances Limited was renamed Phoenix Life Limited.

31 December 2005
The funds of the following companies were moved in to Phoenix Life Limited:

Swiss Life UK plc, Phoenix Assurance Limited, Bradford Insurance Company Limited, and Royal & SunAlliance Linked Insurances Limited.

2 May 2006
Britannic Asset Management changed its name to Resolution Asset Management.

1 September 2006
We bought the life businesses of Abbey National plc. Abbey National Life plc was then re named to Phoenix Life Assurance Limited.

31 December 2006
The funds of the following companies were moved to Phoenix Life Limited:

Alba Life Limited, Britannic Assurance plc, Britannic Retirement Solutions Limited, Britannic Unit Linked Assurance Limited, Century Life plc, and Phoenix Life & Pensions Limited.

1 May 2008
Pearl Group Limited bought the life businesses of Resolution plc.

1 August 2008
Phoenix Life Assurance Limited became part of the Royal London Group.
